No. 8 Lady Cougars Take Care of Augusta

The Lady Cougars kicked off a three-match weekend with its sixth straight win.

COLUMBUS - The eighth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team began a busy weekend with a 5-2 win over Augusta University on Friday. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Walden Tennis Center in Columbus.

With three matches in three days, CSU (10-4, 2-0 PBC) looked to put down the Jaguars early on Friday. The Lady Cougars got off to a 1-0 start after winning first and second doubles in dominant fashion. 

At the top spot, Valentina Abrile and Mariana Ramirez downed Claudia Roca and Julia de Macedo 6-1. In the other match that was completed, Neila Trklja and Agostina Bigotti were 6-2 winners over Clara Basunana and Edith Croda.

Third doubles was unfinished as Sara Ramirez and Yelena Labat were in a tight 3-3 match.

Augusta (13-3, 1-3) did grab two singles victories to get on the board and make things interesting. At first singles, 31st-ranked Roca grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 upset victory over 11th-ranked Trklja. AU also won second singles where 53rd-ranked de Macedo downed 73rd-ranked Mariana Ramirez 6-1, 6-3.

However, Columbus State won the remaining four matches to secure its sixth straight victory. Abrile took care of business 7-5, 6-3 at third singles over Rueda, while Labat won fourth singles 7-6, 6-2 against Teresa Franco.

Luciana Galves was the most impressive CSU player in singles play as she raced by Basunana 6-1, 6-0 at the fifth spot. In the lone three-set match of the day, Bigoitti outlasted Carlota Costa 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to earn the come from behind victory.

Columbus State stays in PBC play and hosts Georgia College on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Walden Tennis Center.
