COLUMBUS - The seventh-ranked Columbus State University baseball team took down Young Harris College 14-5 Saturday afternoon to win game two of a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at Burger King Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars are now 25-4 (10-1 PBC), while the Mountain Lions fall to 19-9 (7-4 PBC).
Columbus State wasted no time putting runs on the board as the Cougars added two in the first inning.
Isaac Bouton led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and then scored thanks to an RBI triple down the right field line from
Colby Brabston.
Robert Brooks followed with an RBI double to give CSU the 2-0 lead.
CSU added four more runs in the bottom of the second, putting the Cougars ahead 6-0 over YHC. Brooks did it again, ripping an RBI single into left field to score
Connor Kirley and put Brabston on third base. A wild pitch from YHC's starting pitcher Nate Lamb allowed Brabston to cross the plate to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Steven Minter walked, putting
David Meadows up to bat with runners on first and second. Meadows smacked a two-run RBI single into left field, scoring Brooks and Minter.
The Mountain Lions scored two runs in the third as Jackson Jones hit a two-run RBI single through the right side of the field.
In the fifth,
Derek Wylie smacked a solo home run over the right field fence to extend CSU's lead to 7-2. However, Jones responded in the sixth with a solo shot himself, making it a 7-3 ballgame.
With runners on first and third, Minter made it 8-3 with a clutch fielder's choice bunt to first base, but YHC's first baseman was too slow with the throw home, allowing Brooks to score.
The Cougars added another run in the seventh as the Mountain Lions walked in a run.
In the top of the eighth inning, Young Harris' Steven Spell hit an RBI single into left field and with a defensive error, Noah Fitzgerald was able to score to make it 9-5.
Columbus State sealed the deal in the bottom of the inning, forcing another run-rule on the Mountain Lions. Kirley started the scoring with an RBI single to left field, plating Wylie, then a hit-by-pitch and three walks ended the game after YHC went through four pitchers in the inning.
Cougar starter
Noah Windhorst (5-2) earned the win on the mound after pitching six innings, striking out eight and allowing three runs. Lamb (3-3) received the loss after six pitchers entered the game after him. CSU's Austin Elliot (1.1 IP) and
Logan Seehafer (1.2 IP) also pitched for the Cougars.
Brooks led CSU going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Meadows and Brabston each collected two hits, with Meadows picking up three RBIs and Brabston two. Minter also added two RBIs.
