MORROW, Ga. – The Columbus State University Men's Basketball team picked up a strong road victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Clayton State University 97-87 in Peach Belt Conference action at The Loch.
Columbus State scored 45 points in the first half before pouring in 52 more in the second half to pull away late. The Cougars shot efficiently from the floor and capitalized on transition opportunities, finishing with 97 points while committing just four turnovers.
Ahmed-Sory Soumahoro and
Jordan Mitchell led a balanced offensive effort, each scoring 19 points for the Cougars.
Marlon Smith and
Masiah Jones added 14 points apiece, while
Jaylen Harris scored 12 points on four three-pointers off the bench.
Pascal Volz played a key role in directing the offense, dishing out five assists to go along with 11 points.
As a team, Columbus State shot 36-for-64 from the field and went 17-for-20 at the free-throw line, while also scoring 20 points off turnovers and 28 points in the paint. The Cougars' depth again proved to be the difference, with the bench accounting for 20 points in the win.
With the victory, Columbus State improves to 7–4 overall and 2–2 in Peach Belt Conference play. The Cougars will continue conference action on Thursday, December 18, when they host Thomas University at the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center. Tip-off is set for 10:00 a.m. for Muscogee County School District Day.
