COLUMBUS – Junior guard Samara Saunders has been named the Columbus State University Athlete of the Week, presented by Chick-fil-A on Macon Road and Manchester Expressway, after delivering two standout performances in Peach Belt Conference play.

Saunders, a Business major from Grayson, Ga., showcased her scoring ability and composure throughout the week, helping fuel the Lady Cougars' strong start in conference action.

She opened the week with a 12-point effort against Lander on Dec. 3, shooting 6-of-8 from the field while adding 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block in just 19 minutes of play. Saunders followed it up with a breakout performance during Columbus State's win over Flagler on Dec. 6, pouring in 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting and going 6-for-9 at the free-throw line. She also contributed 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

Saunders shared her favorite quote, Psalm 46:5, which continues to inspire her on and off the court: "God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day." 

Her consistency and ability to step up in key moments made her an easy choice for this week's honor.
