Lakeland, Fla. – The Columbus State University women's soccer team battled to the final whistle but came up short in a 1–0 loss to Florida Southern on Saturday night at Moccasin Field.
The Moccasins (2-0-1) capitalized on their best first-half chance to take the lead in the 24th minute. Off a free kick from defender Aliya Roberts, that fell to FSC's Breena Harrigan, who finished cleanly for what proved to be the decisive goal.
Despite the setback, the Lady Cougars (1-2-0) controlled much of the match offensively, outshooting the Moccasins 20–6 and holding a 9–4 advantage in shots on goal. CSU also earned three second-half corner kicks but could not find the equalizer against Florida Southern goalkeeper Carly Brodsky, who recorded nine saves to secure the shutout.
Kendal Coreil led the Lady Cougars with five shots, including two on target, while
Mia Robinson added four attempts and tested Brodsky twice.
Sarah Hungerford and
Michelle Medina each registered shots on frame as CSU kept consistent pressure throughout the second half.
Harris made three saves in goal for Columbus State in a strong effort behind a back line that limited Florida Southern to just two second-half attempts.
The match featured a physical edge with three yellow cards issued, including cautions to
Avery Williams in the 77th minute and two Moccasins in the second half.
The Lady Cougars will look to bounce back quickly against Eckerd College on Sunday, September 14, at 12:00 pm in St. Petersburg, FL.
