ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Columbus State University women's soccer team showed grit and composure on Sunday afternoon, rallying from an early deficit to defeat Eckerd College 2–1 at Johnson Field. The win evens the Lady Cougars' record at 2–2 on the season.
The Tritons (1–2–1) struck first in the 19th minute when forward Freija Aflenzer converted a pass from Rakel Holmarsdottir, giving Eckerd a 1–0 lead. Despite the goal, CSU's defense settled in behind goalkeeper
Heidi Harris, who finished with one save while playing all 90 minutes.
After generating just one first-half shot, Columbus State turned up the pressure after the break, outshooting the Tritons 11–1 in the second half. The breakthrough came in the 61st minute as
Shania Wegesend capitalized on a defensive miscue to fire home the equalizer, her second goal of the year.
The decisive strike arrived in the 89th minute when
Michelle Medina finished a precise setup from
Sophia Leal, sealing the comeback for the Lady Cougars. Medina's second goal of the season punctuated a dominant half in which CSU earned four corner kicks and kept Eckerd on its heels.
