COLUMBUS, GA. – The Columbus State baseball team won its second straight weekend series and extended its current win streak to seven games with a 6-3 win over Ohio Dominican University on Sunday afternoon at Burger King Stadium.
With the win, Columbus State has now moved its overall season record to 8-7 through 15 games, while Ohio Dominican falls to 0-6 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides were scoreless through the first two innings of Sunday's game until Columbus State broke through with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Michael Cruz scored on a passed ball, and junior Jax Yoxtheimer had an RBI single in the frame.
- Ohio Dominican evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth before CSU immediately answered with two runs of its own in the home half to take a 4-2 lead.
- Cruz hit his first home run of the 2026 season, a solo shot to left, in the fifth, and Yoxtheimer recorded his second RBI of the day with a double to left center.
- A run in the top half of the eighth for the Panthers cut the Columbus State lead in half until the Cougars scored two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase the advantage to 6-3.
- Yoxtheimer's third RBI of the game came on another double to left center, and senior Cayden Evans drove in a run with an RBI single in the eighth.
- Sophomore right-hander Bailey Thorne picked up his first save of the year and third of his career with a scoreless ninth inning of relief.
NOTES
- Columbus State deployed nine total pitchers in the game as senior right-hander Tucker Starling (1-0) earned the win, allowing just one hit over 1.2 innings of work with a strikeout out of the bullpen.
- The senior duo of Trenton Burnett and Christian Harmon, along with the junior trio of Danny Hershberger, Wyatt Tharpe, and Logan Waldrop pitched one inning each on the mound and combined for five strikeouts.
- Yoxtheimer was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, three RBI, and a run scored. The Phenix City, Ala. native also had two stolen bases to bring his season total to 20 on 22 attempts.
- Fellow junior Corey Berry was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored, while Cruz finished 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.
