COLUMBUS, GA. – Columbus State University's men's tennis team, ranked fifth in the latest ITA poll, suffered its first loss of the 2026 season on Sunday with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of No. 1 University of West Florida from the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
Columbus State is now 9-1 overall, while the Argos improve to 16-1 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars gained an early 1-0 lead in the match after winning two of three doubles matchups. CSU's senior tandem of Elias Peter and Andrea Sandron took down the nation's top-ranked doubles duo 6-4 in the first flight, followed by a 6-2 win at No. 3 from senior Daniel Hammond and Benedek Szombathelyi.
- In singles play, Hammond collected the Cougars' only point with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on the No. 6 court.
- (25) Thomas Cardona battled through three sets in a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 loss to (2) Sebastian Rondon, and (68) Sandrone went the distance against (64) Rafael Sabio in a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 decision for his first loss of the year.
- (39) Hugo Didier went toe-to-toe with (2) Diego Duran in the second flight before suffering a 6-3, 6-4 loss.
