19th-Ranked CSU Takes No. 5 West Alabama Down to the Wire

COLUMBUS, GA. – The 19th-ranked Columbus State women's tennis team took No. 5 University of West Alabama down to the wire on Monday afternoon before falling by a 4-3 score at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.

Columbus State is now 6-4 overall, while the Tigers improve to 12-3 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars took control with two wins in doubles play, starting with a 6-2 win at No. 3 by grad student Annie Adams and junior Maria Markosov
  • The tandem of senior Laura Pesickova and freshman Isabell Ek teamed together for a 6-3 win at No. 2 to clinch the point for CSU.
  • In singles play, (27) Nikoline Gullacksen proved dominant in a 6-2, 6-4 win in the top flight over Shaira Rivera, the 10th-ranked singles player in the latest ITA rankings.
  • West Alabama won in straight sets at Nos. 3 and 6 as well as a three-set win at No. 5 to earn three points.
  • Redshirt-sophomore Sofia Lauretti went the distance on court No. 4 for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory to set up a winner-take-all match in the second flight.
  • Junior Monika Temkova battled from start to finish before ultimately falling by a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 decision to 18th-ranked Alex Milliam to end the match.
