COLUMBUS – The Columbus State baseball team opened its three-game Peach Belt Conference series against Augusta University with a 13-1 run-rule victory on Friday night at Burger King Stadium.
Columbus State is now 26-15 overall with a 17-8 record in the PBC, while Augusta falls to 17-25 on the year with an 11-14 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as junior Jax Yoxtheimer hit a lead-off solo home run to right center to put the home team ahead 1-0.
- In the fourth inning, CSU plated four runs on three hits and an Augusta fielding error to build a 5-0 lead. Seniors Jackson Chizek and Bryce Knox each had RBI singles in the inning.
- Columbus State extended its advantage to 10-0 with a five-run fourth inning, drawing five walks in the inning with just one hit and another Augusta fielding error.
- Chizek and Knox each drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring a run home, while fellow senior Michael Cruz scored two more with an RBI single through the left side in the frame.
- Cruz added two more RBI to his total with a run-scoring single in the fifth, and Columbus State scored its final run on an Augusta wild pitch in the sixth.
- Columbus State ace Sawyer Wilson (5-3) held the Jaguars scoreless until a solo home run in the top of the seventh broke up the shutout.
NOTES
- Wilson went the distance for his third complete game of the 2026 season, giving up just one run on eight hits with three strikeouts.
- Yoxtheimer finished the game 3-for-3 with two walks, a double, a home run, an RBI, four runs scored, and two stolen bases to fill the stat sheet.
- Cruz tallied four RBI in his 2-for-4 night at the plate, while Knox was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI of his own.
- Chizek also had two RBI and two walks with a stolen base as juniors Corey Berry and Cole Eison each had an RBI for the Cougars.
