COLUMBUS – The Columbus State baseball team tallied a 12-2 run-rule win over Augusta University on Saturday afternoon from Burger King Stadium in Peach Belt Conference action.
Columbus State is now 27-15 overall with an 18-8 record in the PBC, while Augusta falls to 17-26 on the year with an 11-15 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Augusta built a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run, Columbus State starter Connor Folds settled in to give up just four hits over the next five innings of play.
- Folds (7-5) picked up the win after allowing just two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.
- The Cougars did not get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning when junior Jacob Smith drove a run in with an RBI single. Fellow junior Corey Berry tied the game at 2-2 just two batters later by drawing a walk with the bases loaded.
- Back-to-back singles from junior Jax Yoxtheimer and senior Jackson Chizek plated two runs apiece and gave CSU a 6-2 advantage.
- Senior Cayden Evans put the Cougars ahead 8-2 with a two-run home run, his team-leading fifth of the season.
- In the seventh, Smith and senior Michael Cruz each scored on an error by the Augusta second baseman to move the lead to 10-2 before Chizek drew a bases-loaded walk to move the advantage to nine runs.
- Evans provided the deciding 12th run with an RBI single to center and enforced the run-rule, giving Columbus State the win.
NOTES
- Senior Tucker Starling made his 12th relief appearance of the year, allowing just one hit with a strikeout in an inning out of the bullpen.
- Evans was 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks, a home run, and three RBI, while Cruz finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
- Smith was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs of his own and an RBI, and Yoxtheimer had a 3-for-5 day, recording a double, two runs, two RBI, and a stolen base.
- Chizek also had two RBI and a stolen base in the victory.
- The victory was Columbus State's third such decision by run-rule this week after defeating Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday and August in the series opener on Friday.
