Croft Scores Twice as Cougars Defeat Middle Georgia State

Kelsey Croft scored twice as Columbus State Women’s Soccer used five unanswered goals to defeat Middle Georgia State 5-1 Wednesday evening at Nesmith Field. The Cougars outshot the Knights 32-1 and improved to 4-2-1 on the season.

COCHRAN, Ga. | The Columbus State University Women's Soccer team scored five unanswered goals to earn a 5-1 victory over Middle Georgia State University Wednesday evening at Nesmith Field.
Middle Georgia struck first in the 15th minute when Ayah Abdul-Malik scored an unassisted goal to give the Knights an early 1-0 advantage.

The Cougars responded with four goals over the final 20 minutes of the opening half. Kendal Coreil tied the match in the 26th minute, scoring her second goal of the season off assists from Brianna Nguyen and Shania Wegesend.

Payton Conti gave CSU the lead less than five minutes later, finding the back of the net in the 31st minute for her first goal of the season. Nguyen extended the advantage to 3-1 in the 39th minute when she converted a penalty kick.

Kelsey Croft added another goal just 43 seconds later, scoring in the 40th minute to send Columbus State into halftime with a 4-1 lead.

The Cougars continued to control the match in the second half. Croft scored her second goal of the evening in the 67th minute off an assist from Brylee Schermerhorn, pushing the CSU advantage to 5-1.

Columbus State's defense did not allow a shot in the second half and limited Middle Georgia to just one attempt for the entire match. Huda Sayedzada played the final 74:18 in goal without allowing a goal and earned the victory.

The Cougars dominated the offensive numbers, finishing with a 32-1 advantage in shots, a 20-1 edge in shots on goal and an 18-1 advantage in corner kicks. Middle Georgia goalkeeper Hollie Keefe recorded 15 saves.

Columbus State improves to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play, while Middle Georgia falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
