Anderson, S.C. - Despite having a 26-7 shot advantage, the 17th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team needed a Courtney Jacquay goal in the 89th minute to down Anderson University 3-2 Tuesday afternoon. The non-conference match took place at Trojan Stadium in Anderson, S.C.
"We knew coming into the match that this was going to be a good test for us playing our first true road match of the season," stated head coach Jay Entlich. "Courtney stepped up big for us and I'm proud of her and the whole team for competing the entire match."
"We still have to keep improving every day in practice especially defending set plays."
Columbus State (5-3-0) found itself down early in the match as Faith Johannes corralled a corner kick in the box off the foot of Olivia Scalzitti and beat CSU goalkeeper Meosha Hatcher to the left to put the Trojans ahead 1-0 after 25 minutes.
It looked like Anderson would be heading into the locker room with the lead until Mandy Janowitz struck. Racing down the left side of the field in the 44th minute, Janowitz drilled a shot into the net for the equalizer.
The Lady Cougars picked up the intensity in the second half firing 18 shots in the 45-minute frame. Anderson (2-4-3) managed to keep the Lady Cougars off the board blocking two dangerous shots while goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neippe made a save on a Chelsea Person shot all within the first 13 minutes of the second half.
However, CSU finally took the lead on a combination of two shots as Nicole Corcione fired an attempt that Neipper saved but couldn't corral. The ball bounced straight to Taylor Marks who capped it off by scoring her first collegiate goal of the career in the 60th minute.
The Lady Cougars had more dangerous looks but couldn't add a third goal over the next 10 minutes. Taylor, Shelby Rolling and Corcione each had a shot attempt saved while Jackie Hellett nailed the post on an attempt in the 67th minute.
Putting together an attack, Anderson earned another corner kick in the 71st minute. Savannah Adkins put a dangerous ball in the box that CSU's defense was unable to clear allowing Krystal Goss to one-time it in to tie the match at two-all.
Looking for the game-winning goal, the Lady Cougars kept getting denied by Neipp and the Trojan defense until the 89th minute as Corcione found a dashing Jacquay who broke away from defenders and beat the goalie for the match winner.
It was Jacquay's first goal in her collegiate career which has spanned three seasons.
The game-winner was CSU's 26th shot of the match tying a season high that has been done three times already this season.
Meosha Hatcher improved her record to 5-1-0 while Kaitlyn Neipper fell to 2-4-3 despite making nine saves.
Columbus State will have only one day of rest before returning to the field on Thursday, October 3 taking on Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia College in Milledgeville at 6:00 p.m.
