Lady Cougars Sweep Past Clayton State

COLUMBUS – The eighth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team picked up its second 9-0 victory in as many days sweeping Clayton State in a Peach Belt Conference match Saturday. All the action took place at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center.

The Lady Cougars are now 7-2 and a perfect 4-0 inside PBC play. The Lakers fall to 1-4 and 0-3 in conference action.

Columbus State was dominant in doubles play dropping just four games in the three matches. Rachael Williams and Olivera Tadijin got CSU on the board first with a perfect 8-0 win over Alina Ageichik and Carolina Monterrubio. At first doubles, the 11th-ranked duo of Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech took down Raluca Pavel and Kristiin Mets 8-1. Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale gave the Lady Cougars the doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory at the second position against Darina Drozdova and Maria Mendez.

In singles, the Lady Cougars continued to play well losing just one set in the six matches. Williams capped off her perfect day at sixth singles blanking Monterrubio 6-0, 6-0. The top two spots almost ended with identical scores as 14th-ranked Leon and Tobar both took home victories. At first singles, Leon won 6-0, 6-1 over Pavel while Tobar took down Mets 6-1, 6-1. Tadijin was a 6-3, 6-3 winner against Mendez at fourth singles.

At the third spot, 50th-ranked Utech edged by Drozdova 7-6 in the first set before taking the second 6-1 for the victory. Saravinder Pannu lost the first set at fifth singles, but rallied to defeat Ageichik. Pannu took the match 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

Columbus State will be right back in action Sunday in a top-10 showdown. The Lady Cougars take on fifth-ranked Lynn at 1 p.m. in Valdosta, Ga.
