No. 1 BYU-Hawaii Sinks No. 8 Lady Cougars

COLUMBUS – The eighth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team went head-to-head with top-ranked BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday with the Seasiders coming away with an 8-1 victory. All the action took place at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center on the campus of CSU.

The Lady Cougars are now 12-4 on the year while BYUH improves to a perfect 14-0.

BYU-Hawaii threw out two top-20 ranked doubles teams on Tuesday, including a top-10 showdown at first doubles. Second-ranked Nannan Zhang and Xin Wen defeated the 10th-ranked Lady Cougar team of Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech. It was just the third loss of the year for the duo. At second doubles, the 16th-ranked pair of Min Liu and Shu-Ying Hsieh took down Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale 8-2. Columbus State put up a good fight at third doubles but Jade Griffin and Kanela Adamson outlasted Saravinder Pannu and Rachael Williams 8-5.

Two of the six singles matches featured ranked opponents facing off. The top spot featured top-ranked Zhang against 14th-ranked Leon with Zhang walking away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Second singles also plotted ranked opponents as 47th-ranked Wen and 36th-ranked Tobar faced off. In the end, Wen took the match 6-1, 6-2. At third singles, seventh-ranked Liu defeated Tadijin 6-0, 6-0.

BYU-Hawaii also won fourth and sixth singles. Hsieh defeated Utech 6-4, 6-2 at the fourth spot while Jeong-Min Jeon won at sixth singles 6-4, 6-1 against Pannu. CSU recorded its only win of the day at fifth singles where Vitale defeated Griffin 6-7, 6-2, 10-8.

Columbus State will now gear up for another top-five opponent as fourth-ranked Armstrong State will make a trip to Columbus on Saturday, April 2. All the action will begin at 11 a.m. at the Blackmon Tennis Center.
