Josh FullerDAHLONEGA, Ga. – The eighth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team didn't show any signs of rust playing its first match in a week as the Lady Cougars swept North Georgia 9-0 Saturday afternoon. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the UNG Tennis Complex in Dahlonega, Ga.
With the win, CSU is now 8-3 and a perfect 5-0 in PBC play. North Georgia is now 6-3 and 1-2 inside the conference.
All three doubles matches ended in the same result as CSU took all of the matches by a score of 8-4. At the top spot, 11
th-ranked
Camila Tobar and
Kirsa Utech downed Karina Gurgenyan and Sandra Ungricht 8-4.
Beatriz Leon and
Giorgia Vitale flew by Kathrin Waidner and Emma Etelalahti at the second spot.
Olivera Tadijin and
Rachael Williams were also 8-4 winners at the third position over Mathilde Baartvedt and Simone Krog.
In singles action, the Lady Cougars dropped just two sets in the six matches. In the marquee match, 14
th-ranked Leon defeated Waidner 6-4, 6-3. Tobar won at second singles besting Gurgenyan 6-4, 6-1. Playing at third singles, 50
th-ranked Utech roared back after dropping the first set to defeat Ungricht 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.
In another tight match, Tadijin edged by Baartvedt 7-5, 7-5 at fourth singles. Pannu won her second consecutive match taking down Lexa Rae Loden 6-3, 6-4 at the fifth spot. Playing just her third singles match of the year, Vitale won a three-set thriller 6-4, 4-6, 14-12 over Krog.
Columbus State will be right back in road action Sunday taking on Young Harris at 11 a.m.
