No. 8 Lady Cougars Take Down No. 15 VSU 5-3

COLUMBUS – The eighth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team won its third straight match downing 15th-ranked Valdosta State 5-3 Wednesday. The match took place at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center in Columbus.

The Lady Cougars improve to 10-3 after defeating its highest ranked opponent of the year. VSU is now 5-4.

Columbus State got off to a quick start taking two of the three doubles matches. Playing at the top spot, the 11th-ranked duo of Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech had no problem taking down Josephine Jedrychowski and Bea Hernandez 8-2. Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale were 8-5 winners at second doubles over Laura Ubeda and Sabrina Schmidt. VSU snuck in a victory at third doubles as Anke Poncelet and Daniella Barta won 8-6 over Olivera Tadijin and Rachael Williams.

Valdosta State won two singles matches, but the Lady Cougars were always in control of the match. VSU took third and fourth singles on the day. At the third spot, Jedrychowski upset 50th-ranked Utech 6-3, 6-3 while Schmidt was a 6-2, 6-3 winner against Tadijin at fourth singles.

However, CSU took first, second and six singles to secure the win. In the marquee match of the entire day, 14th-ranked Leon recorded a huge win against 22nd-ranked Hernandez. Leon dropped the first set 6-3 before rallying to take sets two and three by the score of 6-4. Tobar won in straight sets at second singles taking down Ubeda 6-1, 6-4. Williams played the most dominant match of the day at sixth singles defeating Joanna Lario 6-0, 6-1. Vitale was up a set and just three games away from a victory at fifth singles when play was called.

Columbus State will have a few days off before hosting Anderson on Saturday. The matches will begin at 2 p.m. at the Blackmon Tennis Center.
