COLUMBUS – The eighth-ranked Columbus State University women's team closed out the regular season with a bang on Sunday taking down 19
th-ranked Georgia College 8-1 in a Peach Belt Conference match. All the action took place at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center in Columbus.
Columbus State finished the regular season with a 17-5 record and an 11-1 mark inside PBC play. GC is now 19-6 and 9-3 in conference action.
With the win, CSU clinched the second seed in the next week's PBC Tournament in Florence, S.C. The official bracket will come out early in the week.
CSU got off to a quick start sweeping doubles play to take a commanding lead. At the top spot, the 10
th-ranked pair of
Camila Tobar and
Kirsa Utech flew by Jena Kelly and Katie Krupp 8-1.
Beatriz Leon and
Giorgia Vitale took down Camille Clausse-Pujo and Macy Polk 8-4 at second doubles. To cap off the sweep,
Olivera Tadijin and
Rachael Williams downed Hanna Serdinia and Emma Niemi 8-4.
The Columbus State dominance carried over to singles play as the Lady Cougars dropped just sixth singles. First singles was a three-set thriller as 14
th-ranked Leon and Clausse-Pujo battled in a third set tiebreaker. Leon walked away victorious 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 to save the win. At the second spot, 36
th-ranked Tobar dropped just one game in each set in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Polk. Tadijin was also a winner for the Lady Cougars taking down Kelly 7-6, 6-4.
At fourth singles, Utech defeated Cristalei Polk 6-2, 6-4 while Vitale played a nearly perfect match in a 6-1, 6-0 win at fifth singles over Krupp. GC's lone win came from Serdinia as she won 6-2, 6-3 against
Saravinder Pannu.
