No. 8 Lady Cougars Fall to No. 4 Armstrong

COLUMBUS – The eighth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team faltered Saturday dropping an 8-1 decision to fourth-ranked Armstrong State in a Peach Belt Conference match. All the action took place at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center.

 
The Lady Cougars are now 12-5 and 7-1 inside PBC play, while Armstrong moves to 16-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference action.
 
Armstrong won two of the three doubles matches to grab control of the day. In a top-10 showdown at first doubles, the third-ranked team of Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega shutout the 10th-ranked pair of Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech 8-0. The Pirates also won third doubles as Lena Pacholski and Nicole Fossa Huergo defeated Olivera Tadjin and Rachael Williams 8-2.
 
Columbus State was able to earn a win at second doubles where Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale upset the 19th-ranked pair of Carolina Prats-Millian and Alejandra Cisneros 8-5.
 
The Pirates swept singles action despite the Lady Cougars battling. In the showcase match of the day, fourth-ranked Huergo and 14th-ranked Leon played a three-set thriller at first singles. Huergo took the first set 6-4 before Leon responded for a 6-4 victory in set two. However, Huergo took the third set 10-4 to secure the win. At second singles, ninth-ranked Lutzeier defeated 36th-ranked Tobar 6-3, 6-0.
 
Playing at third singles, fifth-ranked Cisneros took down Tadijin 6-1, 6-2 while 48th-ranked Prats-Millian won fourth singles 6-0, 6-4 over Utech. Vitale put up a strong fight at fifth singles, but in the end Stomlega walked away victorious with a 6-4, 6-4 win. In the final match of the day, Pacholski defeated Pannu 6-4, 6-0.
 
Columbus State will have another top-10 clash on Sunday as the Lady Cougars host 10th-ranked Flagler. All the action will begin at 10 a.m. at the Blackmon Tennis Center.
