FLORENCE, S.C. – After play was suspended on Friday due to rain, the eighth-ranked and second-seeded Columbus State University women's tennis team completed its quarterfinal match of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Saturday morning taking down seventh-seeded North Georgia 5-0. The tournament is being held at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center in Florence, S.C.
The Lady Cougars (18-5) advance to the semifinals later this afternoon against 10
th-ranked and third-seeded Flagler. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Doubles play was completed Friday before the rain. CSU swept all three matches to grab full advantage.
Beatriz Leon and
Giorgia Vitale recorded the first Lady Cougar victory at the second spot with an 8-1 win against Karina Gurgenyan and Sandra Ungricht. Just moments later, the 10
th-ranked duo of
Camila Tobar and
Kirsa Utech knocked off Kathrin Waidner and Emma Etelalahti 8-2 at the top spot.
Rachael Williams and
Olivera Tadijin completed the sweep after an 8-3 victory over Mathlide Baartvedt and Simone Krog.
Needing just two more wins to clinch the match, the Lady Cougars were nearly there before play was suspended. However, CSU took care of business on Saturday as Leon and Vitale registered wins to allow the Lady Cougars to advance to the semis. At first singles, 14
th-ranked Leon made quick work of Waidner 6-2, 6-0. It was nearly the same outcome at the fifth spot as Vitale won 6-0, 6-2 over Krog.
The other four Lady Cougars all were up a set and leading the second when play was called.
