Lady Cougar Tennis Breezes Over No. 10 Flagler

COLUMBUS – Playing its second straight top-10 opponent, the eighth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team defeated 10th-ranked Flagler 8-1 Sunday in Peach Belt Conference play. All the action took place at the Mary V. Blackmon Tennis Center in Columbus.
 
With the win, CSU is now all alone in second place in the league with a 13-5 record and an 8-1 PBC mark. Flagler is now 15-4 overall and 7-1 in conference action.
 
"This was a great bounce back victory for the girls," stated head coach Evan Isaacs. "We played really well and took down one of the best teams in our region."
 
The Lady Cougars took full control of the match in doubles play as they swept all three matches. At the top spot, the 10th-ranked team of Camila Tobar and Kirsa Utech bounced back from a loss on Saturday to defeat Kelly Burge and Mary Jo Nanti 8-2. Beatriz Leon and Giorgia Vitale continued to play well for CSU as they took down Thaisa Pereira and Lizanne Jinkertz 8-4 at second doubles. Olivera Tadijin and Rachael Williams completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at third doubles over Kelly Stewart and Laura Kelly.
 
The good play rolled over to the singles matches as Columbus State won five of the six matches played. The marquee match of the day came at first singles as 14th-ranked Leon and 49th-ranked Stewart took the court against each other. Leon picked up the easy win with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Stewart. Tadijin notched another victory for CSU at third singles taking down Nanti 6-3, 7-6. Utech won by the same score at fourth singles defeating Pereira in straight sets.
 
CSU also recorded wins at fifth and sixth singles. Vitale had no problem at the fifth spot breezing by Burge 6-0, 6-3. Williams was victorious at sixth singles 6-3, 6-3 over Kelly.
 
Flagler won its lone match at second singles as Jinkertz upset 36th-ranked Tobar 6-3, 6-2.
 
Columbus State will be back in action next weekend taking on Georgia Southwestern on Saturday, April 9. The match will begin at noon in Americus, Ga.
