PENSACOLA, Fla. – The seventh-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team registered a banner victory Thursday taking down sixth-ranked West Florida 5-2. The nonconference match took place at Ralph Carson Tennis Complex in Pensacola, Fla.
"The ladies played a tremendous match today," said head coach
Evan Isaacs. "West Florida is a very talented team and I'm glad the team was prepared for the challenge."
Doubles was very tight with Columbus State (17-2) coming away with the 2-1 advantage. West Florida took the first match at the third spot with
Kirsa Utech and
Rachael Williams falling 8-2. CSU evened the score with 19
th-ranked
Giorgia Vitale and
Camila Tobar picking up the 8-6 win at second doubles. In the swing match, fifth-ranked
Beatriz Leon and
Beatriz Lopez won a classic tiebreak at the top spot. The Lady Cougar duo took the match 9-8 (7-4).
West Florida (19-6) was able to get one more win in the match taking first singles in a ranked showdown as 29
th-ranked Utech lost 6-3, 7-6 to the 34
th-ranked player in the nation. CSU swept third, fourth and fifth singles to clinch the match. At third singles, 43
rd-ranked Lopez knocked off her opponent 7-6, 6-4. Tobar and Leon strolled to victories at fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Tobar won her math 6-1, 6-4 while Leon dominated her opponent 6-0, 6-1.
Second and sixth singles were unfinished. UWF took the first set at second singles while Tadijin split the first two sets at sixth singles.
The Lady Cougars will be back in action in Pensacola Friday morning taking on Xaiver (La.) at 9 a.m.
