TUSKEGEE, Ala. - The Columbus State University baseball team came away victorious on the road defeating Tuskegee 13-1 on Wednesday. The game was played at Paterson Field.
"It's always nice to grab these mid-week wins especially when you're on the road," head coach Greg Appleton said. "We knew we were going to throw numerous arms out there in short stints but I was happy with how each of them responded in their opportunity. We have a big conference series upcoming at Flagler so we'll have ourselves prepared and ready for a battle this weekend."
Columbus State (20-8, 8-4 PBC) grabbed another first inning run and never looked back in the non-conference showdown. Frank Wager ripped a first pitch RBI base knock in the opening inning to give him his team leading 27th RBI this season.
Tyler Cadenhead (3-3) would get the start going a pre-determined two innings of hitless ball. The junior retired all six batters he faced while picking up one strikeout in the win.
Russell Forthofer would come in for the third and fourth innings for CSU to keep the shutout going. The junior would get out of a third inning jam with two runners on by securing a two-out groundout that came back to him for the third out.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that the Cougar offense would get back on the board. Drew Webb would lead off the top of the fifth with a single. After a Kendall Ford walk it was a sacrifice bunt that put both in scoring position with only one-out. Robert Brooks would cash in on the opportunity ripping a double to make it a 3-0 game. It was his team-leading ninth double this season for the sophomore.
CSU would tack on two more runs in the sixth as the first two batters Chase Brown and Grant Berry reached the base paths via a walk and a HBP. Matthew McDade would then pick up a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. The runs would come across as Webb would draw a bases-loaded walk followed by an RBI-single from Ford.
The Cougars would put the finishing touches on the game exploding for six more runs in the final inning. Patience at the plate earned them two walks and two singles by the first four batters before Tuskegee began to lose control. Three Cougars were hit by a pitch with a Dane Bullock single mixed in to help CSU cross the double-digit run plateau for the sixth time this season.
The Cougars will hit the road for a conference showdown against Flagler starting on Friday, March 29. First pitch in Saint Augustine is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
