COLUMBUS - The ninth-ranked Columbus State University women's tennis team grabbed a big win over top-ranked NAIA Georgia Gwinnett 4-3 on Wednesday. The match was played at the Walden Tennis Center.Â
It was undefeated Georgia Gwinnett that opened up by snatching the doubles point from the raucous home crowd at CSU. 32nd-ranked Beatriz Lopez and Clara Audap fell 1-6 to Madeline Bosnjak and Emerald Able at the top doubles spot. Over at second doubles 17th-ranked Luise Sachs and Noa Davico lost 3-6 to give the point away to the visitors. Natalia Kattah Paz and Candice Paya went unfinished 1-4 at third doubles.Â
Columbus State (12-3, 3-0 PBC) also saw their two ranked singles players in Lopez and Marleen Tilgner drop their matches at first and second singles. 33rd-ranked Tilgner succumbed two tight sets 6-7, 6-7 to Bosnjak while 67th-ranked Lopez lost in the tiebreaker 4-6, 6-1, 3-6.Â
But the depth of CSU showed out in a big way as their third through sixth singles went to work on the courts.Â
Paya would snatch a point in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 while Davico would do the same, winning at fifth singles 6-1, 6-4.Â
With the back and forth match being played out in front of a big crowd, Columbus State saw their fourth and sixth singles go to point determining tiebreakers.Â
Sachs would triumph over her counterpart coming back to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Finally over at sixth singles it was Paz taking down her opponent 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 to squeak out the win.Â
The Cougars will head back into conference play on the road this upcoming weekend to take on Augusta on Saturday, March 30. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
