COLUMBUS - Led by an individual medalist performance by
Jordan Doull, the Columbus State University men's golf team captured the 2021 Cougar Invitational presented by Aflac on Tuesday. The two-day tournament was held at the Green Island Country Club in Columbus.
The Cougars carded an impressive 2-under 278 over the final round to win the event by four strokes over top-ranked West Florida. The score was the best by any team over the three-round tournament. Columbus State finished with a 10-over 850 54-hole total. Lee University (+27, 867) jumped to third place on Tuesday behind UWF (+14, 854), while Valdosta State University (+356, 876) took fourth.
It wasn't as nearly as close for the individual championship with Doull lapping the field. The junior turned in a 3-under 67 in round three to finish at 8-under 202 for the week. He was under par in all three rounds and was the only golfer to finish in the red, winning the tournament by eight strokes. It's the second title for Doull in his Cougar career but the first since the fall of 2018.Â
"I'm just so very proud of these men," said Director of Golf
Mark Immelman. "To win is one thing, but to win at home in such a prestigious event is entirely another accomplishment. We are for sure going to enjoy this one for a day or two and then get back to work in preparation for the remainder of the season."
The tournament win is the first for the Cougars this season and the first at its home event since 2017.Â
Doull's title was never in question on Tuesday. He began his day with a birdie on the opening hole before making the turn with a 1-under mark. He did the most damage on the back nine, picking up three more birdies to get to 4-under for the day. Doull wrapped up the round with a bogey and two pars to claim his 10th collegiate top-five finish.
Ronan Kleu was another top-five finisher for Columbus State. After firing a 3-under 67 in the second round on Monday, Kleu picked up where he left off with an even-par 70 score. The sophomore was consistent throughout, sinking 14 pars throughout the day. Kleu made a push to climb to third on the leaderboard with birdies on the 15th and 17th for his third top-five finish in four events this season. For the week, Kleu shot a 1-over 211.
Another Cougar that caught fire on Tuesday was senior
Preston Wagaman. Wagaman was one shot shy of tying his teammates for the lowest round of the event with a 2-under 68. The Evans, Ga. native played bogey-free golf for 17 holes until a mishap on his last hole ruined a chance for a clean round. Wagaman still climbed the leaderboard to tie for 11th with a 6-over 216.Â
Benjamin Womack contributed to Columbus State's total on Tuesday with a 4-over 74. Womack ended the event with birdies on the sixth and 12th to finish in a 35th-place tie with a 14-over 224.
One stroke ahead of Womack on the final leaderboard was
Arran Kanth. Kanth concluded play with a 13-over 223 after shooting a 4-over 74 on Tuesday.
Luke Barnes and
Adam Aycock also rounded out play on Tuesday. Playing as individuals, Barnes posted a 9-over 79, while Aycock carded an 11-over 81. Barnes (+22, 232) and Aycock (+28, 238) finished 60th and 69th, respectively.
Columbus State will play its final regular-season event of the year next week in Pensacola, Fla. competing in the Argonaut Invitational on April 5 and 6.Â
