Tennis to Host Two Top-25 Opponents This Weekend

CSU will play Auburn Montgomery on Friday before hosting the University of West Alabama.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University tennis team will play their first home matches of the 2022 season this weekend at the John W. Walden Tennis Center in Columbus.

The No. 2 Cougars and No. 7 Lady Cougars welcome Auburn University Montgomery on Friday at noon before taking on the University of West Alabama on Saturday at 2 p.m. 

Admission into both matches is free of charge.

COUGAR NOTES
• The Cougars (2-0) have been busy lately as Saturday will end a stretch of three matches in four days for the team. CSU defeated Division I Alabama State University 5-2 on Wednesday in Montgomery, Ala. to move to 2-0. 
• Columbus State has won 35 straight regular-season matches dating back to the 2019 season
• Four Cougars currently hold long winning streaks in spring play dating back to last season. Javier Cueto Ramos leads the way with 20 straight wins, while Pietro Martinetti (15), Alvaro Regalado (15) and Tommaso Schold (12) all sporting impressive streaks 
• Columbus State has won 19 straight matches in Columbus
• CSU defeated AUM (7-0) and West Alabama (6-1) last season 

LADY COUGAR NOTES
• The women's team will hit the court for the first time since Feb. 2 on Saturday after back-to-back rainouts. CSU (1-0) began the year with a 7-0 road win at Anderson University
• Yelena Labat was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 7 thanks to her work in the Anderson match. Labat grabbed her first career win over a nationally-ranked opponent following a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 49 Anna Greer in the third singles spot. She was also a 6-4 winner at second doubles with Sara Ramirez Goncalves
• Like her male counterparts, Valentina Abrile is working on an impressive individual streak. The sophomore has won 20 straight singles matches, including winning her first career match at number singles last week
• The Lady Cougars are 48-4 all-time at the Walden Tennis Center since it opened for the 2017 spring season
• CSU defeated AUM 7-0 in 2021, but the Lady Cougars will be looking for revenge over UWA after falling 5-2

AUBURN MONTGOMERY NOTES
• AUM enters the weekend ranked inside the ITA top-25 on both the men's and women's side. The AUM guys are 14th in the poll, while the women are 20th
• AUM's men's team are 2-0 following a 7-0 win over Spring Hill College on Thursday. Muhamad Bedwan and David Rieme are the seventh-ranked doubles team in the nation and are off to a 2-0 start in the first position
• The Warhawk women opened their season on Thursday with a 7-0 victory over Spring Hill. AUM easily handled SPC, not dropping more than two games in any set

WEST ALABAMA NOTES 
• It will be another top-25 showdown for the Lady Cougars and Cougars on Saturday as both West Alabama's teams are ranked nationally. The CSU ladies will have a tough test with UWA is fifth in the first ITA poll. The Tigers are 25th on the men's side
• On the women's side, West Alabama is 1-0 after taking its season-opener 6-1 over Mississippi College on Tuesday. Haina Franco (22nd) and Katia De La Garaz (24th) are both ranked as singles players. The duo is fourth playing together in doubles.
• The Tigers are also 1-0 on the men's side after a 5-2 win on Tuesday at MC. Illari Vesanen and Lucas Hammon are ranked 24th but didn't play together in the victory
