WINGATE, N.C. - The third-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team hit the court on Friday and picked up a 6-1 win over Wingate University at the WU Tennis Complex.
In its first match since March 6, CSU (8-1) showed no signs of rust, taking the doubles point to begin the afternoon. All three Cougar doubles teams won, including the top-two ranked pairs in the nation. Top-ranked
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos won first doubles 6-1, while second-ranked
Tommaso Schold and
Pietro Martinetti took second doubles 6-3.
Christian Garay and
Felix Steen claimed third doubles 6-2.
The Cougars raced to five more wins in singles play, including top-ranked Regalado winning a 3-set thriller at first singles. After dropping the first set to Florian Walcher, the senior rallied, taking the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to win his 21st straight match in spring competition.
Cueto Ramos was also a 3-set winner at second singles defeating Luka Brown 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. CSU took third and fourth singles in straight-set fashion as 41st-ranked Schold won at third, while Garay finished on top at fourth.
Steen had to win a third-set tiebreaker to grab Columbus State's final win in the sixth spot (6-2, 5-7, 1-0). Wingate's (4-3) lone victory came at fifth singles where Gabriel Constantino defeated Martinetti 3-6, 7-5, 1-0.
