Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. - The Columbus State University baseball team PBC Tournament run comes to end at the hands of the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes by a score of 4-6 on Sunday, May 7. GSW moves on to the PBC Championship Series which will be held on next weekend in Americus, Ga.
Columbus State was the home team in today's game per tournament rules and it didn't bother the top-seeded Hurricanes because they jumped out to a 1-0 lead off an unearned run. GSW then added on in the top of the second by scoring on a fielder's choice and then a two-run single to left to take a 4-0 lead on the Cougars.
The Cougars scored their first run in the fourth inning as
Win Johns reached via an error then got all the way to third with two wild pitches by the Hurricanes.
Colby Brabston crushed a ball to the warning track in right field to score Johns on a sac-fly.
Trace Twardoski smacked a ball to center field for an RBI triple to bring the Cougars within two. The next batter,
Derek Wylie, earned an RBI with a ground out to score Twardoski from third to bring the game within one.Â
Georgia Southwestern scored two more runs in the seventh with some small ball. The Hurricanes scored the first run on a squeeze play that the batter slid head first to just barely get his hand in to beat the tag. The next batter push bunted right between the pitchers mound and the first baseman for an infield single.Â
Columbus State was unable to mount any sort of comeback as the Hurricane pitchers kept the Cougars off balance all game.
Derek Wylie blasted his 19th homer of the season in the bottom of the ninth to make some noise but GSW got the next two batters out to end the game.
