MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Peach Belt Conference baseball tournament bracket has been set and the Columbus State University Cougars are the third seed in the upcoming tournament, heading to second seed Georgia College State University this weekend. CSU will face sixth seed University of North Georgia in the opening round on Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m.
Columbus State posts a 31-19 record and ended the PBC regular-season with a 17-10 record. North Georgia records a 29-17 record and was 14-10 in the conference regular-season.
In the last matchup between CSU and UNG, the Nighthawks took two of the three games from the Cougars, although two of the games were close. After falling 13-7 in the opening game, the Cougars came back and beat UNG 5-4 in the second. In the final game of the series, Columbus State fell 9-6 after being down 9-0 in the third inning.
Win Johns hit .727 (8-for-11) in the series with three home runs and five RBI.
Derek Wylie and Johns are both in the top-10 in the conference in several categories; batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, OPS, hits, RBI and home runs. For North Georgia, Noah Darden ranks in the top-10 in batting average and on base percentage, while Philip Ard sits in the top-10 in slugging percentage, OPS, doubles, home runs, walks and sacrifice flies.
On the mound, CSU's
Trace Goforth ranks in the top-10 in ERA, opposing batting average, innings pitched, strikeouts and wins as a starting pitcher. UNG's Dylan Noce is also in the top-10 in the PBC in opposing batting average and innings pitched.
