Montgomery Captures NCAA Standard and Two Titles to Highlight Final Day at PBC Track & Field Championships

Montgomery gathers her first national qualifying standard of the season in the 200-meters while claiming two gold medals.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Postseason performances will continue for one Lady Cougar as Nakhia Montgomery leads Columbus State with a NCAA DII standard in the final day of action at the Peach Belt Conference Championships in Daytona Beach.

Columbus State finished sixth out of eight teams with a total of 71 points after two days of action in the Sunshine State.

Montgomery raced with strength in the 200-meter dash, capturing the title and tracking a time of 24.18s for an NCAA Qualifying Standard. With the mark, she punches her ticket to the NCAA Championships in Pueblo, Colorado at the end of May and is the first Lady Cougar to qualify for nationals this season. Montgomery also captured the top spot on the podium in the 100-meter finals, racing to a time of 11.91s.

Liza Varnum performed well on the track also, garnering two top-five finishes in the hurdle events. She highlighted with a podium finish at the 400-meter hurdles, recording a time of 1:05.26 for third. She also captured fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.71s.

Rounding out the races were the two relay squads that competed in the 4x100 and 4x400 events. The grouping of Montgomery, Varnum, Chassidy Lock, and Azorria Higgins marked a time of 48.70s for fourth in the 4x100. Lock, Higgins, Montgomery, and Alesia Johnson then took seventh in the 4x400 with a time of 4:21.25.

For the field events, CSU competed in the shot put, the discus, and the triple jump. Kaitlyn Alston highlighted with a 10.79-meter jump for fourth place. Kayli Miller then led the charge in the throws, tossing a mark of 34.96m for fourth in the discus while adding a ninth-place finish in the shot put after tossing 10.07m.

In addition to the on-track festivities, the PBC also recognized Syni Lacy as a member of the All-Sportsmanship Team.
