COLUMBUS, GA. – The 14th-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team collected a decisive 5-2 victory over No. 9 Embry-Riddle University on Sunday afternoon at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Columbus State opened doubles play with three wins to build an early 1-0 match lead.
- In the No. 1 doubles contest, the senior duo of Yike Liu and Andrea Sandrone turned in a dominant 6-1 victory over the 18th-ranked duo of Marc Mail and Enrico Rosellini.
- Senior Thomas Cardona and junior Samer Al Tori teamed together for a 6-3 win at No. 2, while the 8th-ranked doubles tandem of seniors Daniel Hammond and Benedek Szombathelyi won 6-4 in the third flight.
- Singles play saw two more individual ranked upsets for the Cougars as Cardona was a 6-2, 6-0 winner in the top position over Mail, who is ranked No. 25 overall. CSU sophomore Hugo Didier upended 15th-ranked Rosellini by a 6-4, 6-2 score
- Hammond, the 44th-ranked singles player in Division II, was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No 6, and Sandrone went the distance for his 7-5, 5-7, 10-8 victory at No. 5 for the Cougars.
