BELMONT, N.C. – The 42th-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis pulled off the upset over No. 23 Belmont Abbey College on Saturday morning, earning a 4-3 win in non-conference play at the Reidy Tennis Center.
With the win, Columbus State improves to 6-0 overall to start the season, while the Crusaders fall to 9-11 overall. The victory marks CSU's second triumph over a Top 40 program this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Columbus State opened the day with two wins in doubles play to build an early 1-0 match lead.
- The No. 1 doubles duo of seniors Elias Peter and Andrea Sandrone won 6-3, followed by a 6-4 win at No. 2 from the tandem of senior Thomas Cardona and junior Samer Al Tori.
- Singles play came down to the wire with CSU claiming victories at Nos. 2 and 3, while the Crusaders won their singles contests at Nos. 1, 4, and 6.
- Al Tori was a 6-2, 6-2 victor in the No. 3 flight, and sophomore Hugo Didier won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles win streak to five matches in a row.
- With the match tied at three points apiece, Peter rose to the challenge and claimed a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 to keep the Cougars unbeaten on the season.
