No. 42 Men's Tennis Dominates No. 32 Wingate for Seventh Straight Win

MONROE, N.C. – The 42nd-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team tallied a 4-1 win over No. 32 Wingate University on Sunday morning at Monroe High School.

With the win, Columbus State improves to 7-0 overall to start the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 6-5 overall. The victory marks CSU's third triumph over a Top 40 program this season and second straight win over a higher ranked opponent.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars went ahead 1-0 after winning two of three matches in doubles play.
  • Senior Thomas Cardona and junior Samer Al Tori recorded a 6-2 win at No. 2, followed by a 7-6 win at No. 3 from the tandem of seniors Daniel Hammond and Benedek Szombathelyi to clinch the point.
  • In singles play, (49) Cardona registered a dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 over the nation's 75th-ranked singles player, while senior Andrea Sandrone rebounded from an opening set loss to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
  • Al Tori clinched the decision with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 battle at No. 3 to keep the Cougars' perfect record intact.

Columbus State returns home to the friendly confines of the John W. Walden Tennis Center for its next match against the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Friday, March 20. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
