MONROE, N.C. – The 42nd-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team tallied a 4-1 win over No. 32 Wingate University on Sunday morning at Monroe High School.
With the win, Columbus State improves to 7-0 overall to start the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 6-5 overall. The victory marks CSU's third triumph over a Top 40 program this season and second straight win over a higher ranked opponent.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars went ahead 1-0 after winning two of three matches in doubles play.
- Senior Thomas Cardona and junior Samer Al Tori recorded a 6-2 win at No. 2, followed by a 7-6 win at No. 3 from the tandem of seniors Daniel Hammond and Benedek Szombathelyi to clinch the point.
- In singles play, (49) Cardona registered a dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1 over the nation's 75th-ranked singles player, while senior Andrea Sandrone rebounded from an opening set loss to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
- Al Tori clinched the decision with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 battle at No. 3 to keep the Cougars' perfect record intact.
