MONTGOMERY, ALA. – The Columbus State baseball team tallied 18 runs on season-high 20 hits en route to an 18-2 victory over the University of Auburn at Montgomery on the road at the AUM Baseball Complex
Columbus State is now 21-10 overall, while the Warhawks fall to 8-26 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Columbus State wasted no time putting a crooked number on the scoreboard as the Cougars put up four runs on four hits in the top of the second inning for a 4-0 lead.
- Senior Bryce Knox led off the inning with a solo home run to center, his team-leading fourth long ball of the season.
- Junior Cole Eison laced an RBI triple to right center for Columbus State's second run, followed by an RBI single from fellow junior Jacob Smith just one batter later. Senior Jackson Chizek recorded his own RBI in the inning to put CSU ahead by four.
- In the third inning, senior Cayden Evans drove in a run with an RBI single, while Knox brought home a run with a sac fly to extend the CSU lead to a 6-0 advantage.
- The Warhawks scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third with a solo home run before adding another run in the fifth to cut the deficit back to four runs.
- The eighth inning of play saw Columbus State's offense erupt for 12 runs on nine hits and two AUM fielding errors as the lead grew to an 18-2 score.
- Evans started the scoring in the eighth with a sac fly to right before Knox hit an RBI single to right, bringing two runs across the plate.
- Eison doubled to left field to score two runs, and an RBI single from Corey Berry with the bases loaded added two more runs to the CSU total.
- Chizek drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 14-2, while Evans hit an RBI double in his second at-bat of the inning. Knox, also in his second plate appearance, drove in a run, followed by an RBI single from senior Warrick Wilmot to cap the scoring.
- Redshirt-senior Mathew McMahan sat the Warhawks down in order in the bottom of the eighth to end the game via run rule.
NOTES
- Six different Cougars had multi-hit performances on Tuesday, led by a 4-for-6 outing from Wilmot, who recorded a double, a run, and an RBI.
- Knox was 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs, and five RBI, while Evans was 3-for-6 with a double, a run, and four RBI of his own.
- Berry also had a three-hit night with two runs and two RBI, and Eison (3) and Chizek (2) also had multi-RBI games for Columbus State.
- Redshirt-junior Nathan Webb (2-0) earned his second win of the season after allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits with two strikeouts across 4.1 innings of work.
- McMahan tallied his first career save with 3.2 innings of one-hit relief, striking out four batters out of the bullpen.
