COLUMBUS, GA. – The Columbus State men's tennis team, ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA Poll, registered a 5-2 upset of No. 3 Flagler College on Sunday in a Peach Belt Conference tilt from the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
Columbus State is now 14-2 overall with a perfect 3-0 record in PBC play, while Flagler falls to 15-3 on the year with a 4-1 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars and Saints split decisions at Nos. 1 and 2 in doubles play, with the duo of seniors Elias Peter and Andrea Sandrone winning 6-3 on court one for their seventh straight doubles win.
- In the No. 3 doubles match, seniors Daniel Hammond and Benedek Szombathelyi won 6-4 to clinch the first point of the contest.
- Flagler collected two points with a win at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, but the Cougars won four of the six matchups to seal the upset.
- On court one, senior (23) Thomas Cardona was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over the nation's 37th-ranked individual, while sophomore (48) Hugo Didier won 7-6, 7-5 at No. 2 over the 11th-ranked singles player.
- (63) Hammond (6-2, 6-4) and junior Samer Al Tori (6-4, 6-2) won the respective contests at Nos 4 and 5 to finish off the match. Al Tori's straight set victory came against the ITA's 47th-ranked singles player.
