No. 5 Men's Tennis Wins Close Contest Over No. 14 North Georgia

COLUMBUS, GA. – The Columbus State men's tennis team, ranked No. 5 in the latest ITA Poll, continued its current six-match win streak on Tuesday with a 4-3 triumph over No. 14 University of North Georgia at the John W. Walden Tennis Center in Peach Belt Conference play.

Columbus State is now 15-2 overall with a perfect 4-0 record in PBC play, while North Georgia falls to 11-7 on the year with a 3-2 conference mark..

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars took a 1-0 match lead after doubles play as seniors (24) Elias Peter and Andrea Sandrone won 6-1 at No. 1, followed by a 6-2 win at No. 2 by senior Thomas Cardona and junior Samer Al Tori.
  • Cardona tallied the first point of singles play when his opponent was forced to retire due to injury in the second set, while fellow senior Benedek Szombathelyi won 6-1, 6-4 in the sixth flight.
  • The Nighthawks won at Nos. 2, 3, and 5 to set up a winner-take-all contest on court four. Senior Daniel Hammond came through in the clutch, winning 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 to clinch the match decision.
