MONTEVALLO, ALA. – The Columbus State baseball team suffered an 8-5 loss to the University of Montevallo on Tuesday night in non-conference action from Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
Columbus State is now 27-17 overall, while Montevallo moves to 24-23 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
- The Cougars jumped on the board early with two runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI double from junior Cole Eison.
- Montevallo responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to even the score before taking the lead with a run in the second inning of play.
- In the third, the Falcons moved their lead to 5-2 with a three-run home run.
- Columbus State cut the deficit to just one run with a two-run fourth as junior Jacob Smith drove in a run with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from fellow junior Ethan Crawley. CSU loaded the bases with two out in the inning, but a flyout to left ended the threat.
- A run in the fifth inning followed by two more in the seventh gave Montevallo an 8-4 lead with two innings remaining.
- Senior Bryce Knox led off the eighth inning with a single up the middle and later came around to score on a sac fly from sophomore Luke Miller. The Cougars once again loaded the bases with two out, but couldn't scratch any more runs across the plate.
NOTES
- Knox finished the night 2-for-5 with two runs scored and fellow senior Cayden Evans was also 2-for-5 with a run of his own.
- Eison had two RBI and his eighth double of the season, while Crawley, Miller, and Smith had one RBI each.
- Junior Logan Waldrop was the most effective arm on the mound, allowing just one hit in an inning of relief in his seventh appearance of the year.
