COLUMBUS – After capturing the regular season championships, the Columbus State University tennis programs will move into the postseason with the Peach Belt Conference Tournament getting underway on Friday. The tournament will be played at Francis Marion in Florence, S.C.
Â
Both CSU teams received the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament. The seventh-ranked Lady Cougars will take on eighth-seeded USC Aiken Friday at 9 a.m., while the ninth-ranked Cougars will open up with eighth-seeded Young Harris at 1 p.m.
Â
The 2017 season marked the first time that both programs have captured at least a share of the regular season title in the same year. Both teams are now sitting atop the latest ITA Southeast Region poll.
Â
The CSU women captured their first outright PBC regular season championship behind a 19-2 overall record and perfect 12-0 mark in conference play. The Lady Cougars are 9-2 this season against nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-2 record against teams ranked in the ITA top 10.
Â
Columbus State and USC Aiken met on March 31 in Aiken, S.C. with the Lady Cougars coming away with a 7-2 victory. The Lady Cougars swept the doubles matches before capping off the win by taking second, third, fourth and fifth singles.
Â
The Cougars earned a share of the PBC regular season title for just the second time in program history after an 18-3 campaign that saw CSU go 9-1 against league competition. The Cougars are also 9-2 against ranked teams and own three wins over teams ranked in the top 10.
Â
Like the Lady Cougars, the CSU men own a 7-2 win over Young Harris this season. The Cougars defeated the Mountain Lions back on February 25 in Columbus. CSU fell behind 2-1 after dropping first and third doubles, but the Cougars rebounded and won all six singles matches in straight sets to secure the victory.
Â
The Lady Cougars are aiming for their first PBC Tournament championship, while the Cougars are shooting for their second after getting the title in 2014.
