SUMTER, S.C. - The Columbus State University tennis program had a good showing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships this past weekend. The tournament was held at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
On the singles side, the Cougars and Lady Cougars shined on the court. Junior
Alvaro Regalado captured the singles title in the men's bracket while
Luise Sachs won the individual honors for the Lady Cougars.
Columbus State nearly swept the doubles championship as well. Regalado capped off his perfect week taking home the doubles title with his partner
Matei Avram. For the women,
Kristina Baran and
Beatriz Lopez reached the finals before falling in a tight 7-5 match.
"This was an excellent tournament for both teams," stated head coach
Evan Isaacs. "To battle through the elements was tough for our student-athletes, but they got the job done, and I'm super proud of their accomplishments. We have to continue to improve and get ready for our spring season."
Regalado rolled to the singles title not dropping a set in any of his six matches. The junior entered the tournament as the second-seed and defeated three top-10 seeds in his path to the title. In the semifinals, Regaldo knocked off fourth-seeded Ignacio Bidegain of Anderson 6-0, 6-2 before taking down No. 1 seeded Daniel Belsito of Wingate 6-4, 6-2 in the championship.
It was a similar path for Sachs en route to her title. The junior had a test in her Round of 64 match as she needed three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) to advance pass Fredrika Regner of Francis Marion. Sachs advanced by two ranked opponents into the semifinals where she faced her teammate,
Beatriz Lopez. Sachs got the best of Lopez 6-3, 6-4 to reach the finals against Eden Schlagenhauf of Flagler. In a three-set classic, Sachs earned the title with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
Fabien Asdrubal and
Justin Welz also reached the Round of 16 for the Cougars over the weekend. Both won two matches in the tournament before bowing out of the event. Asdrubal fell in a three-set match (2-6, 7-5, 6-2) to fifth-seeded Luca Bolla of Flagler in the Round of 16. Welz retired due to an illness.
Tommaso Schold and
Felix Steen each won a match in the regional for Columbus State.Â
On the doubles side, Avram and Regalado breezed their way to the championship. The duo collected wins against the ninth-seeded, fifth-seeded, and third-seeded doubles teams over the weekend to win the title. In the championship, Avram and Regalado defeated Matteo Gostoli and Roy Sepanov of Wingate 8-4.Â
The Lady Cougars dominated the singles bracket as four players reached the Round of 16, including three who reach the quarterfinals. In addition to Sachs and Lopez,
Candice Paya and
Neila Trklja also had good showings at the event.
Paya reached the quarterfinals after earning three hard-fought three-set matches victories. In the Round of 32, the junior defeated 16th-seeded Cibeles Zuddy of North Georgia 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 before going the distance to knock off ninth-seeded Elena Bompieri of Wingate 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Paya retired in her quarterfinal matchup.
Trklja had an impressive come from behind win against ninth-seeded Amelie Vossgaetter of Flagler. After dropping the first set 7-5, the freshman rebounded to win the next to sets 6-2, 6-0 to capture the win. She eventually fell in the Round of 16 to fifth-seeded Annie McCullough of Tusculum 6-3, 7-5.
Lopez didn't have any trouble until facing off against her teammate Sachs in the semifinals. She recorded wins against three-ranked foes and won all three matches in straight sets.
Kristina Baran also won a match for the Lady Cougars during the regional.
Baran and Lopez had a good run in the doubles draw for Columbus State. The duo reached the semifinals after a 6-3 win in the Round of 16 and a 6-2 victory in the quarterfinals. Against the twin team of McCullough-McCullough of Tusculum in the semifinals, Baran and Lopez fell in a tight 7-5 match.
The team of Paya and Sachs and
Agostina Bigotti and
Amanda Citre each round their first matches of the event.
