COLUMBUS - The second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team lost for just the second time this season, dropping a tightly contested match 4-2 to Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday. The match took place at the Walden Tennis Center.

The top-ranked NAIA team came to town and grabbed the opening point at doubles in front of a packed crowd at the tennis center. Top-ranked Alvaro Regalado and Zach Whaanga snatched a 6-4 victory at first doubles against Ayed Zatar and Federico Bonacia.

But second and third doubles both went against CSU in the tiebreaker. 26th-ranked KP Pannu and Matei Avram lost 6-7 at second doubles with Arnold Kokulewski and Fabien Asdrubal slipping up by the same scoreline.

In singles play Pannu picked up a point for the Cougars winning in straight sets at first singles 7-5, 6-1. On the opposite end in sixth singles it was Tommaso Schold who took the point in straight sets as well, winning 6-3, 6-0.

Columbus State (13-2, 3-0 PBC) had some tough luck go against them in second and third singles. Asdrubal got the nod at second with 37th-ranked Whaanga at third, and both Cougars were up a break in the third and final set. But Georgia Gwinnett, winners of 100 matches in a row, pulled the comeback and took the point at both courts. Asdrubal lost 4-6, 6-1, 4-6 while Whaanga dropped a 5-7, 6-2, 4-6 decision.

74th-ranked Kokulewski fell victim in fifth singles losing 1-6, 5-7. With the match in hand, 18th-ranked Regalado went unfinished 6-4, 4-6, 5-2.

The loss at the Walden Tennis Center was the first one for the Cougars since West Florida upset them at home last season.

The Cougars will hit the road this upcoming weekend to take on Augusta on Saturday, March 30. The match is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
