CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Columbus State University tennis teams have a chance to win three of the four draws at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship after another solid performance on Friday. The tournament is being hosted by Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte.
On the men's side, CSU has a chance to win both titles as the doubles team of Alvaro Regalado and Tommaso Schold. The pair fended off Rodrigo Carvalho and Phillipp Lemken 9-7 of Flagler to advance to the finals. Christian Garay and Liam Wickwire nearly made it to the championship as well, but dropped a tough 8-4 match.
In singles play, Regalado, Garay and Schold all remain alive in the main draw. All three Cougars recorded two victories on Friday with Schold taking both of his in three-set thrillers. Schold and Garay will play for the right to advance to the championship while top-seeded Regalado will face Carvalho on the opposite side of the bracket.
Beatriz Lopez secured her spot in the women's singles semifinals for the Lady Cougars after losing just four games in two matches on Friday. Lopez and Sara Ramirez Goncalves nearly made it a Columbus State sweep in all four of the final matches on Saturday but the Lady Cougar duo fell in a tight semifinal round match to Vaishali Jorge and Claudelle Labonte-Frey of North Georgia.
The final day of the tournament will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m.
