MILTON, Ga. - In a competitive field, the Columbus State University men's golf team is tied for 13th place after the opening day of the Southern Tide Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event is being played at the Atlanta National Golf Club.
The Cougars sit at 13-over 589 after rounds of 12-over 300 and 1-over 289. CSU will tee off seven strokes back from 10th.
No. 6 Carson-Newman University paces the 20-team field with a 10-under 566. No. 3 USC Aiken (-6, 570) and No. 3 USC Aiken (-5, 571) are within striking distance of the lead. Eighteen of the top-35 teams in the country are competing for this week's title.
Thanks to a 4-under 68 in round two,
Jordan Doull is tied for 19th after the opening 36 holes. The All-American had just one bogey over the second round compared to five birdies that helped him climb the leaderboard. Combined with his 3-over 75 during the morning session, Doull is sitting at 1-under 143.
Martin Gruendemann and
Arran Kanth are separated by one stroke following Monday's rounds. Gruendemann shot a 2-over 74 in round one before an eagle on the par-5 13th helped him to a 1-over 73 in the afternoon. Overall, the transfer is tied for 37th with a 3-over 147. Kanth had the Cougars' best score during round one as the sophomore turned in a 1-over 73. He made four birdies across the round, with two coming on par-5's. In round two, Kanth carded a 3-over 75 to end the day at 4-over 148 and tied for 44th.
Luke Barnes (T-85th, +12 156) and
Benjamin Womack (T-77th, +10 154) both contributed to the team score on Monday. In round one, Barnes' 6-over 78 counted for the Cougars, while Womack's 1-over 73 helped lower CSU's round two score.
The Cougars will tee off at 9:20 Tuesday morning in the final round of the Southern Tide Intercollegiate.
