Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team completed its run to back-to-back ITA National Indoor Championship on Sunday following a 4-0 victory over No. 10 University of Indianapolis.
The Cougars (5-0) are now 6-0 in the second-year event and haven't dropped a single match.
"What can I say about these guys," stated head coach
Evan Isaacs. "They competed all weekend long against some of the most talented teams in the nation, and they kept finding ways to win. It's been a crazy offseason, and this is a great way to begin the year."
Indianapolis made the Cougars work in doubles play as the first match of the day came down to a competitive match at the third spot. After the two sides spilt first and second doubles,
Tommaso Schold and
Pietro Martinetti were battling Nikolaj Talimaa and Pedro Franca. The Cougar duo managed to pull off the tiebreak victory to earn the 7-6 victory.
Christian Garay and
Felix Steen were 6-3 winners at second doubles, while
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos fell in a close 7-5 decision in the top spot.
Columbus State quickly raced to three singles victories to clinch the championship. Regalado secured his first win of the weekend in an impressive 6-1, 6-2 showing over Renato Lima. Schold capped off a perfect performance in Oklahoma City with a 6-4, 6-4 win at third singles against Agustin Gascia. Martinetti was the one who sent CSU off winners as he took down Jason Gerweck 6-2, 6-0.
UofIndy was up a set at second and fifth singles, while Welz and Yoanna Viel were in the third set when play was called.
The win in the title match was the 14th in a row for the Cougars and the 21st straight regular-season victory dating back to 2019.
Columbus State will begin Peach Belt Conference play on Friday, March 5 versus Augusta University. All the action will begin at 2 p.m. in Augusta, Ga.
