Tennis to Host Saturday Doubleheader

CSU will first play Southwest Baptist University before closing out the day against the University of Montevallo.

Update (March 19 - 2 p.m.): The Columbus State women's tennis team will only play one match on Saturday against Montevallo. The men's team will play both Southwest Baptist and Montevallo.

COLUMBUS -
The Columbus State University tennis teams will host a busy Saturday with both Southwest Baptist University and the University of Montevallo heading to the John W. Walden Tennis Center for matches.

The men's team will take on the nationally-ranked Bearcats at 9 a.m. before its match against the Falcons at 2 p.m. The women will just play Montevallo.

The top-ranked Cougars are looking to move to 9-0 on Saturday and record another ranked victory. CSU defeated No. 16 Wingate University 7-0 last weekend for its fifth top-25 win of the season. The Cougars were impressive, winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Columbus State hasn't lost an individual match since Feb. 21 against Auburn University-Montgomery.

Southwest Baptist will play Montevallo on Friday before hitting the court against the Cougars. SBU is currently 6-7, including a 1-1 mark on a Southeast swing. The Bearcats dropped a 4-2 decision to AUM before rebounding for a 4-3 victory over No. 22 West Alabama on Thursday.

Adham Gaber is the top player for No. 25 Southwest Baptist. He is 10-3 in singles action, all at the number one position, and 7-3 with his doubles partner, Youssef Nabil.

Montevallo carries a 2-4 record into Columbus after having two matches canceled earlier in the week. UM has just one win over its last four matches.

Twelve different players have been entered into the singles lineup for the Falcons, with Gavin Salton holding a 3-0 record at the fifth position. Philippe Zehender and Milan Ludlage are 2-1 at number one doubles.

The Lady Cougars are on a four-match winning streak following an impressive 5-2 win over No. 13 Wingate last Saturday. The 14th-ranked Lady Cougars set the tone with three doubles victories before capping off the win in singles play. Beatriz Lopez had a 6-0, 6-0 win at the first spot, while Luise Sachs fought for a 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 win at second singles.

Sachs earned the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week award for her efforts. The fourth-year junior was also a 6-2 winner at third doubles with Amanda Citre.

It will be a rematch on Saturday morning as CSU and SBU matched up in Edmond, Okla. in the opening round of the ITA National Indoor Champion on Feb. 26. The Bearcats won a tight 4-3 match after rallying to take four of the six singles spots.

Southwest Baptist dropped both matches in Alabama on Thursday to fall to 8-5 on the season. The losses were the first for SBU since March 5.

Since their last meeting, SBU has risen to the seventh spot in the ITA Poll. Diana Cabrera is 10-2 seeing the majority of her action at the second position, while Dona Abohabaga is 5-5 at the top spot.

Montevallo will move above .500 with two wins in Columbus this weekend. The Falcons are 3-4 and have won two of their last three matches. Isabelle Barfoot is 4-0 at the bottom of the singles lineup, while Mireia Turro is just 1-6 and 1-5 in the number one single spot.

UM is 11-10 overall in doubles matches this year, with Barfoot and Eva Dirr holding a 3-1 mark.
