Tennis to Open PBC Play on Friday

Both teams hold impressive winning steaks in PBC action.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University tennis teams will travel across the state on Friday to jump into Peach Belt Conference play against Augusta University. All the action will begin at 2 p.m. at the Newman Tennis Center.

The Cougars (5-0) and Lady Cougars (2-3) are returning from Oklahoma City after competing in the ITA National Indoor Championship this past weekend. The top-ranked Cougars won their second consecutive title at the prestigious event, while the Lady Cougars recorded a top-20 victory over Midwestern State University.

Tommaso Schold will lead the Cougars into Augusta after earning back-to-back PBC Player of the Week awards. The third-year sophomore is a perfect 4-0 in his third singles spot so far this season to go along with a 5-0 record with Pietro Martinetti in doubles play.

The backend of CSU's lineup has been strong in five matches. Columbus State hasn't dropped a match at either third, fourth, fifth or sixth singles (12-0).

Columbus State will carry a 14-match winning streak into Friday and has won 25 straight PBC matches dating back to the 2017 season.

The Lady Cougars will look for consecutive wins for the first time in 2021 on Friday after capping off the ITA Indoor Championship on a high note. Second-year freshman Amanda Citre had a good showing in OKC, going 2-0 singles and a 3-0 doubles play.  In doubles, Citre teamed up with Luise Sachs for the wins, including an impressive 7-6 decision to help give CSU the doubles point against No. 14 Southwest Baptist University in the opening round. The duo has won four straight and is 4-1 on the year.

CSU's women's team is unbeaten in its last 35 PBC matches.

Augusta's men's team is off to a quick 3-1 start, including a 6-1 win over PBC rival Francis Marion University on Feb. 24. The Jags (3-1, 1-1 PBC) did lose their latest match against Lander University on Sunday. Lucas Boelle is unbeaten in both singles and doubles play for AU.

For the women, Augusta (4-0) hasn't dropped a match so far in 2021. The Jags have been tested though, winning two 4-3 decisions. One of those came in the Jags latest against Emmanuel College on Saturday. Three different doubles teams have played at the top spot, while the top two singles positions have gone 0-6.
