Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team won its 26th straight Peach Belt Conference match on Friday after sweeping Augusta University 7-0 to open conference play. The match took place at the Newman Tennis Center.
The Cougars (6-0) continue their impressive start to the season. CSU has shutout its last four opponents, including three en route to its ITA National Indoor Championship last weekend in Oklahoma City.
Columbus State earned the doubles point after capturing victories in the top two spots.
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos had no issues at first doubles blanking Ricard Rubio and Quention Cano 6-0.
Christian Garay and
Felix Steen were also winners, grabbing a 6-2 decision over Martin Hurtado and Lucas Bolle.
Tommaso Schold and
Pietro Martinetti were tied at four when CSU clinched the point.
The Cougars continued to flex their muscles in singles play. Garay played in the first position and recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rubio, while Schold handed Bolle his first loss of the year after a 7-6, 6-2 outcome at second singles. Cueto Ramos had one of the most impressive performances on the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cano at third singles.
In the fourth spot, Steen battled to a 6-4, 7-6 victory, while
Justin Welz recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win against Hurto on the next court over.
Jorge Jimenez Acosta capped off the sweep as he picked up his first collegiate win at sixth singles over Artur Abyan. The freshman turned in a 6-2, 6-0 decision.
Columbus State will have a week off before opening its home portion of its schedule against No. 16 Wingate on Saturday, March 12. All the action will begin at 2 p.m. at the John W. Walden Tennis Complex in Columbus.
