Box Score DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The top-ranked and first-seeded Columbus State University men's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 win over fourth-seeded and 19th-ranked Wingate University on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional at the University of North Georgia Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
With the win, the Cougars (20-0) advance to Sunday's regional championship match against 10th-ranked and third-seeded North Georgia. UNG defeated fifth-ranked and second-seeded Lander University 4-2 earlier on Saturday to earn a spot in the title match. Sunday's championship match will be at 3 p.m.
"This was a good victory open up tournament play," commented CSU head coach Evan Isaacs. "Wingate is a talented team, and we had to earn our points out there. It doesn't get any easier tomorrow, and I know North Georgia will be energized playing in front of their home fans."
Columbus State captured two doubles matches to grab the early lead on Saturday. Felix Steen and Christian Garay were the first CSU pair to complete their match as the duo raced by Enrico Giacomini and Edis Nokic 6-1 at second doubles. Pietro Martinetti and Tommaso Schold were equally as impressive at third doubles with a 6-2 win over Josep Canyadell and Matthew Jones. First doubles was unfinished with the top-ranked doubles team of Alvaro Regalado and Javier Cueto Ramos down 4-3 to Matteo Gostoli and Roy Stepanov.
The Cougars needed just three wins over singles play to punch their tickets to their 12th straight regional championship final. Fifteenth-ranked Garay made quick work at second singles against Sumer. The Columbus native recorded a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory to give CSU its second win of the afternoon. Schold wasn't too far behind his teammate at third singles as he posted a straight-set decision. The 32nd-ranked player in the nation took down George Barfoot 6-3, 6-4 to grab the win. Capping off the match was Martinetti as the second-year freshman won sixth singles to clinch the match win for Columbus State. Martinetti blasted Nokic 7-5, 6-2 in the clincher.Â
At fourth singles, Cueto Ramos was just one game away from a 7-6, 6-4 win over Canyadell, while second-ranked Regalado and 44th-ranked Giacomini were battling in the third set. Wingate (13-3) did win a set at fifth singles where Stepanov was up a set over Justin Welz.Â
