Three Cougars, Lopez named ITA All-Americans

The men's team was one of three teams in the nation to have three players named as All-Americans.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Four Columbus State University tennis players were named All-Americans by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday.

On the men's side, CSU was one of three teams to have three All-Americans, with Alvaro Regalado, Christian Garay and Javier Cueto Ramos all earning the honor. For the Lady Cougars, senior Beatriz Lopez collected her fifth overall All-American award in her illustrious career.

Regalado continues his Cougar legacy by picking up his 10th ITA All-American award after being selected to both the singles and doubles team. The four-year star went 13-1 for the Cougars in 2021 to finish the season as the second-ranked singles player in the country. Regalado rattled off 13 straight wins following a loss to begin the year to lead Columbus State to the program's third straight NCAA DII national championship match. The Spaniard had three wins over ranked foes and now is 66-3 in his Cougar career.

In doubles play, Regalado and Cueto Ramos teamed up to become the top doubles pair in all the nation, going 19-2 at the number one position in the lineup for head coach Evan Isaacs. The duo won four matches in the postseason, including an impressive 6-0 decision in the national championship, to finish the year on a 10-match winning streak. Regalado and Cueto Ramos were a perfect 9-0 against Peach Belt Conference foes as the Cougars won their fourth straight PBC Tournament title. It's the second consecutive season that the tandem has earned All-American honors. In their careers, Regalado and Cueto Ramos have a 25-3 record when playing as a team.

Garay grabs his first ITA All-American accolade after an impressive first full season as a Cougar. The Columbus native played a key role for his hometown team at the second position in the singles lineup, posting a 12-3 record as the Cougars went 23-1 over the year. Garay finished in the 16th spot in the ITA singles rankings and went a perfect 7-0 against PBC opponents.

Lopez becomes a three-time ITA singles All-American after leading the Columbus State women's team to the NCAA Championship semifinals for the third straight year. The senior played all of her 19 matches at the top position, going 14-5, including two wins against nationally-ranked competition. She climbed her way to seventh in the ITA singles poll and won a crucial match in the NCAA Championship quarterfinals against Hawaii Pacific University. She is the third three-time singles All-American in Lady Cougar history in the NCAA Division II era.
