LAKELAND, Fla. - The Columbus State University men's golf team fired rounds of 287 (-1) and 288 (E) to sit at 1-under par and in sixth place after the opening day of the Matlock Collegiate Classic on Monday. The 54-hole event is being played at the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla.
The Cougars are just one of six schools in the red after two rounds. Top-ranked Barry University (-19, 557) and Florida Southern College (-17, 559) had fantastic days and will be the favorites for the championship heading into Tuesday.Â
Jordan Doull will have a chance to pick up his second top-five finish of the season on Tuesday. The All-American is currently one of five players tied for fifth after shooting a 4-under 140 on Monday. Doull's best work came in the morning as he shot a 4-under 68, including collecting an eagle on the par-five 17th. He followed in the afternoon with an even-par 72 after posting 14 pars.
Arran Kanth and
Eric Wowor are hanging around the even mark after the opening day. Both Cougars are tied for 21st with 1-over 145 scores and will look to climb the leaderboard in round three. Kanth had CSU's second-best round of the day, firing a 1-under 71 during the afternoon. He closed his round strong, playing 2-under over his final seven holes. Wowor turned in rounds of 1-over 72 and 2-over 73 on Monday. The transfer had just one blemish in the opening one before finding four birdies in round two.
Martin Gruendemann and
Preston Wagaman rotated from being included in the team score to being the drop score for CSU on Monday. Wagaman began the day with a 1-over 73 but ran into trouble during the afternoon with a 4-over 76. Gruendemann posted his 76 in the morning before rebounding in a big way in round two. The German sunk five birdies en route to an even-par 72.Â
A.J. Ewart leads the field headed into Tuesday, sitting a 10-under par and with a three-shot lead.Â
Columbus State will tee off at 8:30 on Tuesday in the final round.
