Men's Golf Jumps a Spot, Earns Top-Five Finish at Matlock Classic

Jordan Doull grabbed his second top-10 finish of the year on Tuesday.

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Columbus State University men's golf team battled rainy conditions on Tuesday to shoot an 11-over 299 to grab a fifth-place finish at the Matlock Collegiate Classic on Tuesday. The tournament was held at the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla. 

CSU climbed up one spot on the leaderboard to collect its second top-five team finish of the season. Columbus State posted a 54-hole total of 874 (10-over) for the tournament. Top-ranked Barry University (-17, 847) held off tournament hosts Florida Southern College (-14, 850) to win the title. 

Aarran Kanth led Columbus State in the final round, firing an even-par 72 to climb inside the top-20. Kanth had back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th and finished the day with four overall. His last came on the par-5 2nd as the sophomore sunk the put to climb back to even-par. Overall, Kanth finished tied for 17th with a 1-over 217.

Jordan Doull secured his second top-10 finish of the year on Tuesday with a 2-over 74. Doull was at even-par over his first 14 holes before running into trouble with a bogey on the 18th and a double-bogey on the 1st. The Australian was able to recover with a birdie on the second-to-last hole of the day. Doull finished tied for eighth for the week with a 2-under 214.

Eric Wowor completed his second tournament as a Cougar in a tie for 26th after turning in a 4-over 76 in round three. Wowor was 2-over on the front and back nines on Tuesday to complete play with a 54-hole score of 5-over 221. 

Preston Wagaman was the final team scorer for Columbus State on Tuesday. The senior shot a 5-over 77 to finish with a 10-over 226 for the tournament. Wagaman finished tied for 44th.

Martin Gruendemann posted a 7-over 79 to finish as CSU's drop score. Gruendemann still managed a top-50 result, finished tied at 48th with an 11-over 227. 

Columbus State will have a couple of weeks off before returning to action in the Hurricane Invitational at the Doublegate Country Club in Albany, Ga. on Monday, Feb. 28.
